Albert de l'Épée, né le 24 novembre 1712 à Versailles, est un célèbre éducateur et philanthrope français. Fils d'une famille noble, il a grandi dans un environnement privilégié et a reçu une éducation de qualité. Passionné par l'apprentissage des langues et la pédagogie, il décida d'embrasser une carrière d'enseignant dès son plus jeune âge. Sa vie bascula en 1752 lorsqu'il rencontra deux jeunes sœurs sourdes-muettes, Louise et Julia, qu'il parvint à comprendre grâce à leur propre langage gestuel. Ce fut un choc pour lui de réaliser la communication limitée à laquelle étaient condamnées ces personnes handicapées. Profondément touché, il décida de consacrer sa vie à l'amélioration de leur sort. Albert de l'Épée se lança alors dans une quête pour trouver un moyen de permettre aux personnes sourdes-muettes de communiquer de façon plus efficace. Il se forma auprès de l'abbé de l'Épée, un prêtre ayant déjà développé une méthode rudimentaire d'enseignement pour les sourds-muets. Albert en tira des enseignements qui l'amenèrent à développer sa propre méthode d'enseignement. Sa méthode reposait sur un système de signes manuels et d'expression faciale. Il créa des gestes spécifiques pour chaque mot et les associa à des dessins et des objets concrets. En utilisant cette méthode innovante, Albert de l'Épée réussit à enseigner à ses élèves sourds-muets à lire, écrire et communiquer avec les autres. En parallèle, il créa une école à Paris, appelée l'Institution des sourds-muets, où il poursuivit son travail d'éducation et d'amélioration des conditions de vie des personnes sourdes-muettes. Au fil des années, l'Institution des sourds-muets devint un exemple reconnu dans le monde entier. De nombreux étudiants étrangers vinrent apprendre la méthode d'Albert de l'Épée et la diffusèrent dans leurs propres pays. Son travail révolutionnaire ouvrit de nouvelles perspectives aux personnes sourdes-muettes en leur permettant de s'intégrer pleinement dans la société. Albert de l'Épée est décédé le 23 décembre 1789 à Paris, où son travail continuerait d'inspirer des générations d'éducateurs pour les personnes sourdes-muettes. Sa contribution à l'éducation des personnes handicapées et son dévouement à leur inclusion sociale lui valurent une reconnaissance posthume et son nom est aujourd'hui associé à l'amélioration de la vie des personnes sourdes-muettes dans le monde entier.
