Albert Ier de Belgique est né le 8 avril 1875 à Bruxelles dans une famille aristocratique. Il est le fils de Philippe, comte de Flandre, et de Marie de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Dès son plus jeune âge, il est formé pour succéder à son oncle, Léopold II, sur le trône belge. Albert effectue ses études à l'Institut Le Rosey en Suisse, puis à l'Académie militaire de Bruxelles. Il se révèle être un élève brillant et passionné par les sciences, ce qui lui vaut d'être surnommé "le Roi-Savant". En 1900, Albert se marie avec la duchesse Élisabeth en Bavière, avec qui il aura trois enfants : Léopold III, Charles et Marie-José. La famille royale belge est proche de celle de Bavière, notamment à travers les liens entre Albert et le prince héritier Louis de Bavière. Ce mariage apporte également une dimension catholique très forte à la famille royale belge. Lorsque Albert accède au trône en 1909, la Belgique est déjà secouée par des tensions politiques, notamment entre les Flamands et les Wallons. Albert se révèle être un souverain compétent et bienveillant, cherchant à apaiser les tensions et à renforcer l'unité du pays. Il s'implique également dans des projets sociaux et éducatifs, contribuant ainsi à l'amélioration des conditions de vie de la population belge. Cependant, le règne d'Albert est profondément marqué par la Première Guerre mondiale. En tant que chef des armées belges, il mène vaillamment la résistance contre l'occupation allemande. Albert et sa famille s'exilent en France durant la guerre, mais continuent à soutenir la résistance belge. Le roi se rend régulièrement sur le front pour encourager les soldats et est surnommé "le Roi-Chevalier" par ses sujets belges. Après la guerre, Albert s'implique activement dans la reconstruction de la Belgique et participe activement à la création de la Société des Nations, l'ancêtre de l'ONU. Il s'investit également dans des projets visant à promouvoir la paix et la coopération internationale. Albert encourage notamment l'idée européenne et est considéré comme un fervent partisan de l'unification du continent. Malheureusement, le règne d'Albert est brutalement interrompu le 17 février 1934, lorsque le roi trouve la mort en escaladant une paroi rocheuse dans les Alpes suisses. Sa disparition prématurée plonge le pays dans le deuil et son fils, Léopold III, lui succède sur le trône. Albert Ier reste dans la mémoire collective belge comme un roi courageux, intègre et généreux, ayant joué un rôle majeur dans l'histoire du pays.
