Alexandre Chatrian, de son nom complet Alexandre Chatrian de Balsac, est né le 18 décembre 1826 à Soldatenthal, en Moselle. Il est souvent considéré comme l'un des plus grands écrivains et dramaturges français du XIXe siècle. Chatrian a passé son enfance dans un milieu modeste, mais il a développé très tôt une passion pour les livres et la littérature. Grâce à ses talents d'écriture, il a pu financer ses études en tant que maître d'école. Son amour pour les lettres le pousse à s'installer à Paris en 1849, où il fait la connaissance d'Émile Erckmann. La rencontre avec Erckmann signe le début d'une collaboration fructueuse qui durera toute leur vie. Ensemble, ils écrivent de nombreux romans, nouvelles et pièces de théâtre qui ont connu un immense succès. Leurs œuvres sont marquées par la volonté de défendre des valeurs humanistes et sociales, ainsi que par un profond attachement à la Lorraine, région dont ils sont originaires. Parmi les œuvres les plus connues d'Alexandre Chatrian et d'Émile Erckmann, on peut citer "L'Ami Fritz", "Le Conscrit de 1813" et "Les Rantzau". Leurs écrits sont caractérisés par leur style réaliste, leur intérêt pour les questions sociales et leur profonde empathie envers les personnages.
