Alexandre de Beauharnais naît le 28 mai 1760 à Fort-Royal, en Martinique. Il est le fils de François de Beauharnais et de sa femme, Julie Clary. En grandissant, Alexandre montre un grand intérêt pour la politique et la carrière militaire. Il décide d'aller étudier en France et s'installe à Paris en 1779. En 1786, Alexandre se marie avec Joséphine Tascher de La Pagerie, une créole originaire de la Martinique. Le couple a deux enfants, Eugène et Hortense. Plus tard, Joséphine deviendra célèbre en épousant Napoléon Bonaparte et devenant impératrice des français. Pendant la Révolution française, Alexandre se distingue en tant que général. Il est nommé commandant de la garde nationale parisienne et participe activement aux combats contre les royalistes. Il est également élu député à la Convention nationale en 1792. Cependant, en 1794, Alexandre est arrêté et emprisonné sous les accusations de corruption et d'enrichissement personnel. Il est libéré quelques mois plus tard, après la chute de Robespierre. Malgré cette épreuve, Alexandre reste un fervent républicain et soutient la politique de Napoléon Bonaparte. En 1798, Alexandre est nommé ambassadeur en Allemagne. Il conseille également Napoléon lors de la campagne d'Italie et participe à la bataille de Marengo en 1800. En reconnaissance de ses services, Napoléon le nomme ministre de la guerre et le fait comte de l'Empire. Cependant, la carrière d'Alexandre est interrompue tragiquement en 1804 lorsqu'il est arrêté par la police secrète impériale et condamné à mort pour une prétendue conspiration contre Napoléon. Il est exécuté par guillotine le 23 juillet 1804. La mort d'Alexandre de Beauharnais provoque une grande tristesse parmi ses partisans et soulève des questions sur la légitimité du pouvoir impérial de Napoléon. Sa femme Joséphine est profondément affectée par sa mort et porte le deuil pendant de longues années. Aujourd'hui, Alexandre de Beauharnais est souvent oublié en raison de la renommée de sa femme et de son beau-frère, Napoléon Bonaparte. Pourtant, il a joué un rôle important pendant la Révolution française et a contribué à l'ascension de Napoléon.
