Alexandre Trauner, né le 5 août 1906 à Budapest en Hongrie, est une figure emblématique du cinéma français. D'origine juive, il quitte son pays natal en 1929 pour s'installer à Paris. Là, il entreprend des études d'architecture à l'École des Beaux-Arts, mais c'est finalement le cinéma qui l'attire le plus. Il fait ses premiers pas dans le milieu en tant que décorateur de théâtre et assistant de Jean Renoir. C'est grâce à sa rencontre avec le réalisateur Marcel Carné que la carrière d'Alexandre Trauner prend réellement son envol. En 1938, il travaille pour la première fois sur le film "Hôtel du Nord" et devient rapidement le collaborateur attitré de Carné. Le duo signe de nombreuses œuvres emblématiques du réalisme poétique français, telles que "Le jour se lève" en 1939 ou encore "Les enfants du paradis" en 1945. Les décors conçus par Trauner pour ces films sont reconnus pour leur réalisme et leur esthétisme, contribuant grandement au succès des productions. Pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, Alexandre Trauner fuit la France occupée et se réfugie aux États-Unis. Là-bas, il continue sa carrière en travaillant sur des films hollywoodiens. Après la guerre, il revient en France et retrouve ses collaborations avec les grands noms du cinéma français, notamment Henri-Georges Clouzot avec qui il réalise des chefs-d'œuvre tels que "Quai des Orfèvres" (1947) et "Le Salaire de la peur" (1953). La notoriété d'Alexandre Trauner dépasse les frontières et il est sollicité par des cinéastes du monde entier. Il collabore notamment avec Billy Wilder sur "Le procès" (1962) et "La Vie privée de Sherlock Holmes" (1970), ainsi qu'avec Roman Polanski sur "Le locataire" (1976). Sa brillante carrière lui vaut d'ailleurs d'être récompensé à de nombreuses reprises, notamment par l'Oscar du meilleur décor pour "Le plus beau jour de ma vie" (1956) et "Lawrence d'Arabie" (1962). Parallèlement à son travail dans le cinéma, Trauner participe également à des expositions d'art contemporain, mettant en valeur ses talents d'artiste polyvalent. Il est également membre du jury au Festival de Cannes à plusieurs reprises. Alexandre Trauner s'éteint le 5 décembre 1993 à Omonville-la-Petite, laissant derrière lui une filmographie d'exception et l'héritage d'un décorateur de génie. Son approche réaliste et minutieuse a contribué à façonner l'esthétique du cinéma français et continue d'inspirer les cinéastes contemporains.
