Ambroise Thomas, né le 5 août 1811 à Metz, était un compositeur et chef d'orchestre français du XIXe siècle. Son père était médecin et sa mère donnait des cours de piano. Grâce à cette éducation musicale précoce et nourrie, Thomas a montré un talent précoce pour la musique, en particulier pour la composition. Il a étudié au Conservatoire de Paris, où il a remporté plusieurs prix et a été l'élève de grands maîtres tels que Halévy et Berlioz. Thomas a fait ses débuts en tant que compositeur avec son opéra Le Perron, qui a été bien accueilli. Cependant, c'est avec son deuxième opéra, La Double Échelle en 1837, qu'il a vraiment attiré l'attention. Outre sa carrière de compositeur, Thomas a également occupé des postes importants dans le monde de la musique. Il a été directeur du Conservatoire de Paris de 1871 à 1896, où il a formé de nombreux musiciens talentueux et a redéfini le curriculum musical.
