André Ernest Modeste Grétry est né le 8 février 1741 à Liège, dans les Pays-Bas autrichiens de l'époque. Fils d'un violoniste, il développe très tôt une passion pour la musique et commence à jouer du violon puis de la guitare dès l'âge de quatre ans. Sa famille déménage à Rome en 1749 où il reçoit une éducation très influencée par la religion catholique. C'est alors qu'il fait ses débuts comme organiste dans une église locale, ce qui lui permet de perfectionner sa technique et de développer son oreille musicale. Grétry s'installe à Paris en 1767, où il fréquente les cercles intellectuels et artistiques en vogue. Il se fait rapidement remarquer pour son talent musical exceptionnel, en particulier dans la composition d'opéras-comiques. Il se forge ainsi une réputation dans le milieu, au point d'être sollicité pour composer des œuvres pour la Cour. Son premier grand succès vient en 1768 avec l'opéra-comique "Le Huron". Grétry combine habilement la musique et la comédie dans cette œuvre, et il obtient l'admiration de l'audience parisienne. Il enchaîne rapidement avec d'autres productions populaires, comme "Lucile" et "Zémire et Azor". La Révolution française marque un tournant dans la carrière de Grétry. Malgré son succès antérieur, il est considéré comme un compositeur de musique légère et son style musical est délaissé au profit de formes plus patriotiques et révolutionnaires. Grétry est contraint de composer des hymnes et des chansons patriotiques pour éviter la censure. Cependant, il réussit toujours à ajouter sa propre touche distinctive et à exprimer son talent pour les mélodies entraînantes. Après la Révolution, Grétry peine à retrouver son succès d'antan. Sa collaboration avec le dramaturge Beaumarchais sur l'opéra "Guillaume Tell" en 1791 n'a pas le même retentissement que ses œuvres précédentes. Son style musical et ses thèmes sont désormais considérés comme dépassés, et il se sent de plus en plus en décalage avec les nouvelles tendances musicales. André Grétry décède le 24 septembre 1813 à Montmorency, près de Paris. Sa contribution à l'opéra-comique et son sens de la mélodie restent néanmoins inoubliables dans l'histoire de la musique. Il a laissé un héritage musical riche, avec plus de cinquante opéras et de nombreux autres morceaux qui témoignent de son génie et de son apport au développement de la musique classique en France.
