André Honnorat était un homme politique français né le 31 janvier 1868 à Paris et décédé le 9 novembre 1950 à Aix-en-Provence. Issu d'une famille de notables provençaux, il fit des études de droit et s'engagea très tôt en politique. En 1902, il fut élu conseiller municipal de la ville d'Aix-en-Provence, puis en 1909, il devint maire de la ville, fonction qu'il occupa pendant près de trente ans. En parallèle, il occupa également de nombreux postes à responsabilité au sein des institutions publiques. En 1919, André Honnorat fut élu député des Bouches-du-Rhône et prit rapidement une place importante au sein de la Chambre des Députés. Il se fit remarquer par sa défense active des intérêts de sa région natale et réussi à obtenir des fonds pour la modernisation de l'agriculture provençale et le développement des infrastructures locales. En 1924, il fut nommé ministre de l'Instruction publique et des Beaux-Arts dans le gouvernement d'Édouard Herriot. Pendant son mandat, il œuvra pour la démocratisation de l'accès à l'éducation et à la culture, notamment en instaurant la gratuité de l'enseignement primaire obligatoire. En 1925, André Honnorat fut élu membre de l'Académie des Sciences morales et politiques, une reconnaissance de son engagement et de son travail acharné en faveur de l'éducation et de la culture. Il fut également président de l'Institut de France de 1946 jusqu'à sa mort en 1950. Durant sa carrière politique, André Honnorat s'illustra également sur le plan international. Il participa à de nombreuses conférences internationales et prit part activement aux négociations pour le Traité de Versailles en 1919, où il défendit les intérêts de la France avec ardeur. Il fut également membre de la délégation française à la Société des Nations, l'ancêtre de l'Organisation des Nations unies. André Honnorat restera dans les mémoires comme un homme politique intègre et dévoué à la cause de l'éducation et de la culture. Son action a profondément marqué la ville d'Aix-en-Provence et la France tout entière, et son nom est associé à de nombreuses réalisations, notamment la création de l'École normale d'institutrices d'Aix-en-Provence, rebaptisée depuis l'École supérieure du professorat et de l'éducation André Honnorat. Sa passion pour l'éducation comme moyen d'émancipation sociale et de progrès fut un héritage précieux pour les générations suivantes.
