André Léo, de son vrai nom Victoire Léodile Béra, est une écrivaine et féministe française du XIXe siècle. Née le 15 août 1824 à Lusignan, dans la Vienne, elle grandit dans un milieu bourgeois cultivé. Très jeune, elle se passionne pour la littérature et l'écriture, montrant des talents précoces dans la rédaction de contes et de poèmes. En 1842, elle épouse l'écrivain, journaliste et homme politique Léon Richer, ce qui marque le début de son engagement féministe. Ensemble, ils fondent en 1848 la "Société pour l'amélioration du sort de la femme". André Léo rédige de nombreux articles et pamphlets en faveur des droits des femmes et prône l'éducation égale pour tous les sexes. En parallèle de son engagement féministe, elle se lance dans une carrière littéraire prolifique. En 1851, elle publie son premier roman, "Les Deux Saint-Jean", qui connaît un succès immédiat. Elle enchaîne ensuite les publications, avec notamment "Sophie, la femme de désir" (1853), "Le Lion amoureux" (1858), ou encore "Les Trois mariages de Louise" (1866). Son style est souvent qualifié de réaliste, mais elle y ajoute une dose de romantisme et de féminisme qui lui est propre. André Léo s'implique également activement dans la Commune de Paris en 1871, soutenant la lutte des communards pour l'égalité sociale et politique. Elle participe à la rédaction de journaux et de manifestes révolutionnaires, et tente de mobiliser les femmes pour qu'elles prennent une part active dans les combats. Après la chute de la Commune, André Léo s'exile en Suisse, où elle continue son combat pour les droits des femmes. Elle écrit de nombreux articles, intervient lors de conférences et poursuit son travail d'écriture. Elle décède le 20 mai 1900, laissant derrière elle une œuvre riche et engagée, ainsi qu'un héritage certain dans le combat pour l'égalité des sexes. André Léo est une figure incontournable du féminisme en France. Son engagement sans faille, notamment à travers ses écrits et son action politique, a contribué à faire avancer la cause des femmes. Son œuvre littéraire, qui allie réalisme et féminisme, reste une source d'inspiration pour de nombreuses écrivaines contemporaines.
