Antoine Augustin Renouard est une figure emblématique de la littérature et de l'édition du début du XIXe siècle en France. Né le 25 mai 1765 à Paris, Renouard grandit dans un milieu cultivé et passionné de livres. Il développe très tôt un intérêt pour les lettres et se lance dans des études de droit, tout en se consacrant également à l'étude des langues anciennes. En 1789, année de la Révolution française, Renouard achète une librairie rue Saint-André des Arts, à Paris. Ce sera la première étape de sa carrière d'éditeur. Passionné par le monde du livre, il est reconnu pour son savoir-faire et son sens des affaires. Il n'hésite pas à prendre des risques en publiant des ouvrages ambitieux, notamment des éditions luxueuses de textes classiques. Renouard se distingue par sa maîtrise de la typographie et de l'imprimerie, ce qui lui permet de publier des éditions soignées, estimées de tous. Il entretient des relations privilégiées avec des auteurs renommés de l'époque, tels que Chateaubriand, Lamartine, ou encore Madame de Staël. En 1810, Renouard reçoit un honneur prestigieux, il est nommé imprimeur de l'Université de France. Cette distinction officielle témoigne de l'estime que lui accordent ses pairs dans le milieu littéraire. Il devient ainsi le fournisseur officiel des livres pour l'Université et supervise de nombreuses éditions savantes. Outre son activité éditoriale, Renouard se passionne également pour la bibliophilie. Il collectionne des ouvrages rares et précieux, et possède l'une des plus importantes bibliothèques privées de son époque. Il se consacre également à l'étude de l'histoire du livre, publiant des ouvrages qui font référence dans ce domaine, tels que "Essais sur l'édition des Classiques" ou encore "Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde". Antoine Augustin Renouard laisse un héritage important dans le monde de l'édition. Grâce à son savoir-faire, à sa passion pour les livres et à son désir constant d'innovation, il a su marquer son époque. Sa maison d'édition a continué à prospérer après sa mort en 1853, perpétuant ainsi son héritage et son engagement en faveur de la littérature.
