Auguste Laurent, né le 14 novembre 1864 à La Folie, dans le département de l'Oise, était un chimiste français de renom. Il a grandi dans une famille humble et passionnée par les sciences, ce qui a éveillé très tôt son intérêt pour ce domaine. Dès son plus jeune âge, il s'est familiarisé avec les réactions chimiques et les différentes substances grâce à son père, qui était lui-même chimiste. Auguste Laurent a poursuivi ses études à Paris, où il a intégré l'École de Pharmacie. Diplômé brillamment, il est devenu l'assistant de Charles Gerhardt, chef du laboratoire de chimie organique à l'école. C'est là qu'il a fait ses premières découvertes majeures. En 1887, il publie sa thèse sur la synthèse des acides aminés, travail qui sera considéré comme pionnier dans ce domaine. Sa carrière a été marquée par de nombreuses autres réalisations. Il a notamment contribué à l'identification et à la classification de nombreux composés organiques. Ses recherches sur la chimie des colorants organiques lui ont valu une reconnaissance internationale. En étudiant les propriétés de ces colorants, il a développé de nouvelles méthodes de synthèse et a contribué à l'essor de l'industrie des colorants en France. Auguste Laurent était un fervent défenseur de l'enseignement de la chimie et de la recherche scientifique. Il a exercé en tant que professeur à l'École de Pharmacie de Paris et a formé de nombreux étudiants qui deviendront à leur tour des chimistes renommés. Il a également participé à la création de laboratoires de recherche et a œuvré pour l'amélioration des conditions de travail des chimistes. Au-delà de ses contributions scientifiques, Auguste Laurent était un homme engagé politiquement. Il a été un membre actif de la Commune de Paris en 1871, défendant les idéaux républicains et la lutte contre les inégalités sociales. Cette expérience marquante a renforcé son engagement envers une société plus équitable et lui a donné une perspective plus large sur les enjeux de la science et de la politique. Auguste Laurent est décédé le 23 avril 1904, laissant derrière lui un héritage considérable dans le domaine de la chimie. Son travail a profondément influencé la discipline et lui a valu de nombreuses distinctions, dont la médaille Davy de la Royal Society de Londres. Aujourd'hui, il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands chimistes français du 19e siècle et continue d'inspirer les générations de scientifiques qui lui succèdent.
