Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, de son nom complet Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, fut un écrivain et un homme de lettres français né le 19 janvier 1737 au Havre et décédé le 21 janvier 1814 à Éragny-sur-Oise. Fils d'un artisan bijoutier, il fit ses études chez les jésuites et se passionna très tôt pour la littérature. En 1754, il s'installa à Paris pour poursuivre ses études de droit, mais il ne tarda pas à abandonner cette voie pour se consacrer entièrement à la littérature. En 1762, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre obtint une place de précepteur au Neuchâtel, en Suisse, auprès d'une famille noble. Cette expérience marqua profondément l'écrivain, qui découvrit les beautés de la nature et se prit d'une passion pour la botanique et les sciences naturelles. De retour à Paris en 1765, il publia son premier ouvrage, "Voyage à l'Île de France", qui rencontra un certain succès. En 1770, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre fut choisi pour accompagner l'expédition de Louis-Antoine de Bougainville autour du monde en tant que botaniste. Ce voyage lui permit de visiter les îles de l'océan Pacifique, de découvrir de nouvelles espèces végétales et de faire de nombreuses observations sur les peuples et les cultures qu'il rencontra. De retour en France en 1773, il publia le récit de son expédition, intitulé "Voyage autour du monde". Son œuvre la plus célèbre, "Paul et Virginie", parut en 1788. Ce roman, qui se déroule à l'île Maurice, raconte l'histoire d'un amour pur et tragique entre deux jeunes gens, Paul et Virginie, issus de milieux sociaux différents. Ce livre connut un immense succès et fut traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Il contribua à la renommée de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, qui devint une figure majeure de la littérature française de l'époque. Durant la Révolution française, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre s'engagea politiquement en faveur des idées nouvelles. Il fut nommé membre de la Convention en 1793, mais son attitude modérée lui valut d'être emprisonné pendant la Terreur. Libéré en 1794, il se retira dans sa maison d'Éragny-sur-Oise, où il écrivit de nombreux ouvrages, notamment sur la morale et la philosophie. Il mourut en 1814, laissant derrière lui une œuvre variée et influente, qui explore les thèmes de la nature, de l'amour et de la société.
