Né le 15 juillet 1562, il était issu d'une famille noble originaire du Périgord. Dès son plus jeune âge, Charles de Gontaut Biron se passionna pour les arts militaires et reçut une éducation soignée dans ce domaine. Il entra au service du roi Henri III et participa activement aux guerres de religion qui ravageaient alors la France. En 1604, il devint maréchal de France, une position prestigieuse donnant droit à un siège à la Cour du roi. Il joua un rôle important dans la pacification intérieure du royaume et s'investit dans la diplomatie en tant que négociateur. Cependant, la carrière de Charles de Gontaut Biron fut entachée par une grave trahison. En 1602, il complota secrètement contre le roi et tenta de le renverser. Son plan fut découvert et il fut arrêté pour haute trahison. Jugé coupable, il fut condamné à mort et exécuté le 31 juillet 1602. La trahison de Charles de Gontaut Biron marqua un tournant dans l'histoire de la noblesse française. Elle renforça le pouvoir absolu de la monarchie et mit en garde les grands seigneurs contre toute velléité de révolte contre le roi.
