Charles de Montmorency-Damville, né le 10 septembre 1537 à Chantilly, est une figure majeure de la noblesse française du XVIe siècle. Descendant d'une illustre lignée de la haute noblesse, il est le fils de François Ier de Montmorency, connétable de France, et de Françoise de Laval. Dès son plus jeune âge, il est destiné à une carrière militaire et politique. Dès l'âge de seize ans, Charles de Montmorency-Damville est fait comte de Beaumont-sur-Oise par son père. Il prend part à sa première bataille à l'âge de dix-sept ans, lors de la bataille de Jarnac en 1569, aux côtés de l'amiral de Coligny, dans le contexte des Guerres de Religion qui déchirent alors la France. Son goût pour le combat se manifeste dès lors et il se révèle être un chef militaire talentueux. En 1572, il assiste aux événements tragiques du massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy à Paris mais il parvient à échapper à la fureur des combattants. Après cet épisode, il décide de se retirer temporairement de la politique et se consacre à ses terres et ses domaines, notamment le château de Damville en Normandie dont il tire son nom. Cependant, sa retraite ne dure pas longtemps. En 1576, il est nommé par le roi de Navarre, futur Henri IV, gouverneur de Languedoc. Sa mission principale est de rétablir l'ordre et la sécurité dans cette région ravagée par la guerre. Il met en place une politique de pacification et réussit à apaiser les tensions entre les différentes factions religieuses. Au cours de sa carrière militaire, Charles de Montmorency-Damville se distingue également par son implication dans la politique française. Il est membre du conseil du roi et participe activement aux débats concernant la paix religieuse et la question dynastique. Sur le plan personnel, il se marie à trois reprises, notamment avec Charlotte de Nassau, une cousine du prince de Condé. Charles de Montmorency-Damville s'éteint le 24 décembre 1612, à l'âge de soixante-quinze ans, dans son château de Petit-Andely. Sa vie est marquée par son engagement militaire et politique au service de la France. Son influence sur la pacification du Languedoc et son rôle politique font de lui une figure incontournable de son époque.
