Charles Étienne Gudin, né le 13 août 1768 à Montargis en France, est un célèbre militaire et général français du Premier Empire. Il est connu pour sa brillante carrière dans l'armée, ainsi que pour son amitié étroite avec l'empereur Napoléon Bonaparte. Gudin est issu d'une famille de la noblesse militaire, son père étant lui-même officier de cavalerie. Dès son plus jeune âge, il est destiné à suivre les traces de ses illustres ancêtres. Il rejoint donc l'École militaire de Paris en 1781, où il fait preuve d'un talent prometteur pour les sciences militaires. Au cours de la Révolution française, Gudin s'engage dans l'armée républicaine et gravit rapidement les échelons. Il participe à de nombreuses batailles et démontre ses capacités de meneur d'hommes sur le terrain. Sa bravoure et son sens stratégique ne passent pas inaperçus et lui valent de nombreuses distinctions. C'est cependant sous le règne de Napoléon Bonaparte que Gudin connaît son apogée. Les deux hommes se rencontrent pour la première fois lors de la campagne d'Italie en 1796, où Gudin se distingue par sa ténacité et son audace. Napoléon reconnaît immédiatement les talents de son jeune officier et l'élève au rang de général de brigade en 1805. Le point d'orgue de la carrière de Gudin se déroule lors de la campagne de Russie en 1812. Il est nommé général de division et prend le commandement de la 2e division de la Grande Armée. Gudin se distingue particulièrement lors de la bataille de Borodino, où ses compétences tactiques sont cruciales pour la victoire française. Malheureusement, il est gravement blessé lors de cette bataille et doit être amputé de la jambe droite. Malgré son handicap, Gudin n'abandonne pas et continue de servir l'armée française. Il participe à la campagne d'Allemagne en 1813 et est nommé gouverneur de la ville de Smolensk après la retraite de l'armée de Napoléon. Cependant, lors de la bataille de Valoutina Gora en 1812, il est mortellement blessé et succombe à ses blessures le 22 août, deux jours après la bataille. Charles Étienne Gudin est une figure emblématique de l'histoire militaire française. Son courage, sa loyauté envers Napoléon et ses compétences tactiques en ont fait l'un des généraux les plus respectés de son époque. Son nom est aujourd'hui inscrit sur l'Arc de Triomphe à Paris, témoignant de la reconnaissance de la nation envers ce grand homme.
