Charles-Martial-Allemand Lavigerie, né le 31 octobre 1825 à Bayonne, est une figure marquante de l'Église catholique française. Issu d'une famille bourgeoise, il devient prêtre en 1849 et se distingue par ses compétences intellectuelles et ses talents linguistiques. Il est nommé évêque de Nancy en 1863, puis archevêque d'Alger en 1867. Très tôt, Lavigerie développe un intérêt pour la mission en Afrique, voyant en elle un moyen de répandre la foi catholique tout en combattant les pratiques esclavagistes qui sévissent encore sur le continent. En 1868, il fonde la Société des Missionnaires d'Afrique, également connue sous le nom de Pères Blancs en raison de l'habit qu'ils portent. Sous la direction de Lavigerie, les Pères Blancs s'emploient à établir des missions chrétiennes dans de nombreux pays africains, notamment en Algérie, en Tunisie, au Maroc, en Égypte et au Soudan. Malgré les difficultés rencontrées sur le terrain, Lavigerie s'investit pleinement dans cette entreprise, réalisant de nombreux voyages en Afrique pour superviser les activités missionnaires. Inlassable défenseur des droits de l'homme, Charles Lavigerie se bat ardemment pour mettre fin à la traite des esclaves en Afrique. Il interpelle les dirigeants européens, organise des conférences internationales et fait campagne contre ce fléau qui dévaste le continent. Ses efforts portent leurs fruits lorsque l'empereur éthiopien, Tewodros II, bannit l'esclavage de son pays en 1872. L'aversion de Lavigerie pour l'esclavage le conduit également à militer en faveur de l'éducation des Africains. Il fonde notamment l'Université Sainte-Anne d'Alger, qui forme de nombreux prêtres et personnalités africaines, contribuant ainsi à la renaissance intellectuelle du continent. En 1884, Charles Lavigerie devient archevêque de Carthage et primat d'Afrique, et est créé cardinal par le pape Pie IX. Malgré les honneurs, il reste humble et poursuit son action en faveur des missions et des droits de l'homme, notamment en plaidant pour la protection des Africains victimes des violences coloniales. Charles Lavigerie meurt le 26 novembre 1892 à Alger, laissant derrière lui un héritage inestimable. Son engagement sans faille en faveur de la justice et de la dignité humaine en fait une figure emblématique de la lutte contre l'esclavage et le colonialisme en Afrique. Son œuvre perdure encore aujourd'hui à travers les Pères Blancs, qui continuent d'œuvrer pour la justice sociale et le respect des droits de l'homme sur le continent africain.
