Charles Lefebvre Desnouettes, né le 8 juillet 1773 à Paris, fut un militaire français qui laissa une empreinte indélébile dans l'histoire de la Révolution et de l'Empire. Issu d'une famille noble, il embrassa très tôt une carrière militaire et se distingua dès les premiers affrontements de la Révolution française. En 1792, Desnouettes s'engagea dans la cavalerie et participa aux batailles qui jalonnèrent cette période troublée. Son audace et ses brillantes compétences tactiques lui valurent d'être remarqué par les hautes sphères de l'armée et notamment par le général Bonaparte. En 1799, lorsque Napoléon Bonaparte effectua son coup d'État et prit le pouvoir, Desnouettes fut nommé colonel de la légion des gendarmes d'élite à cheval. En tant que militaire intransigeant et fidèle à l'Empereur, Desnouettes participa à de nombreuses campagnes militaires et se distingua particulièrement lors des batailles d'Austerlitz, de Iéna et de Wagram. Toujours en première ligne, il mena ses troupes avec vaillance et fut blessé à plusieurs reprises. Son courage lui valut d'être promu général en 1808. Cependant, la destinée de Desnouettes bascula en 1814 lorsque Napoléon abdiqua et fut exilé sur l'île d'Elbe. Refusant de reconnaître le régime des Bourbons, Desnouettes prit part à la conspiration de Malet visant à renverser le nouveau gouvernement. Malheureusement, le complot échoua et Desnouettes fut arrêté. Condamné à mort par les autorités royalistes, il fut néanmoins gracié grâce à l'intervention de son épouse. Il passa les années suivantes en exil en Amérique du Sud où il tenta de refaire sa vie. Mais l'appel de la France et son désir de combattre aux côtés des révolutionnaires sud-américains pour l'indépendance du continent sud-américain le poussèrent à rentrer en France en 1830. À son retour, Desnouettes fut nommé maréchal de camp et participa à la Révolution de 1830 qui marqua la fin de la Restauration bourbonienne. Cependant, sa carrière militaire fut de courte durée et il se retira de l'armée en 1835 pour se consacrer à l'écriture de ses mémoires. Charles Lefebvre Desnouettes décéda le 22 mars 1822, laissant derrière lui un héritage militaire et une carrière exemplaire au service de la France et de Napoléon Bonaparte. Son courage inébranlable et sa loyauté indéfectible envers l'Empereur firent de lui une légende de l'histoire militaire française.
