Charles-Marie Widor est un compositeur et organiste français né le 21 février 1844 à Lyon. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands organistes et compositeurs de son époque. Dès son plus jeune âge, il montre un intérêt remarquable pour la musique et apprend à jouer du piano avant de se tourner vers l'orgue à l'âge de 11 ans. Il se passionne alors pour cet instrument et décide d'en faire sa carrière. Widor étudie au Conservatoire de Paris où il obtient plusieurs premiers prix. Il devient rapidement un spécialiste reconnu de l'orgue et donne des concerts à travers toute l'Europe. Sa maîtrise de l'orgue lui vaut une grande renommée et il est nommé organiste de l'église Saint-Sulpice à Paris en 1870, poste qu'il occupe pendant près de 64 ans. Il révolutionne la pratique de l'orgue en développant une technique de jeu virtuose, caractérisée par son remarquable jeu de jambes et sa parfaite coordination des mains sur les claviers. Outre ses talents d'organiste, Widor connaît également une carrière prolifique de compositeur. Il écrit de nombreuses pièces pour orgue qui sont aujourd'hui considérées comme des classiques du répertoire. Son œuvre la plus célèbre, les dix Symphonies pour orgue, est une série de compositions originales qui témoignent de son génie créatif et de son innovation musicale. Ces symphonies exploitent pleinement les possibilités expressives et techniques de l'orgue et constituent un héritage musical inestimable. Charles-Marie Widor est également un pédagogue accompli. Il enseigne l'orgue au Conservatoire de Paris pendant près de 30 ans et compte parmi ses élèves certains des plus grands organistes du XXe siècle, tels que Louis Vierne et Marcel Dupré. Par son enseignement, il transmet son savoir-faire et sa passion pour l'orgue à de nouvelles générations de musiciens. Tout au long de sa carrière, Widor reçoit de nombreuses distinctions et honneurs, témoignant de son influence et de sa contribution à la musique. Il est fait officier de la Légion d'honneur en 1892 et élu membre de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts en 1910. Sa musique est jouée et appréciée par un large public, et son héritage perdure encore aujourd'hui. Charles-Marie Widor s'éteint à Paris le 12 mars 1937, laissant derrière lui un héritage musical exceptionnel et une place de choix dans l'histoire de la musique française.
