Charles Maurras est une figure marquante de la France au XXe siècle, connu principalement pour son rôle en tant qu'écrivain et théoricien politique. Né le 20 avril 1868 à Martigues, dans le sud de la France, Maurras grandit dans une famille de tradition monarchiste et catholique. Il fait des études brillantes au lycée Louis-le-Grand à Paris, où il se distingue par son intelligence et son talent littéraire. Très tôt, il se passionne pour la politique et devient un fervent nationaliste. En 1899, Charles Maurras fonde le mouvement politique Action française, dont le but est de restaurer la monarchie en France et de lutter contre les influences étrangères susceptibles de nuire à l'identité nationale. Ses idées et son discours nationaliste trouvent rapidement écho auprès de nombreux intellectuels et jeunes militants. Maurras se distingue par son style d'écriture incisif et polémique, ce qui lui permet de diffuser largement ses idées à travers ses nombreux articles dans le journal de l'Action française. Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, Charles Maurras soutient l'effort de guerre et promeut le nationalisme français avec encore plus de vigueur. Son engagement intense lui vaut d'être emprisonné en 1918 pour sa participation à des activités antidémocratiques. Cependant, malgré cette situation, l'influence de Maurras ne cesse de croître dans les années qui suivent. Il devient une véritable icône pour les jeunes générations attachées à la défense de l'identité française. Cependant, la popularité de Charles Maurras commence à décliner à partir des années 1930 en raison de ses positions antisémites. Il se rapproche alors du régime nazi en Allemagne, ce qui entraîne la condamnation de l'Action française par le Vatican. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, bien qu'il ne soutienne pas directement le régime de Vichy, Maurras se trouve en difficulté et est déchu de la Légion d'honneur. Après la guerre, Charles Maurras est condamné à la réclusion à perpétuité pour collaboration avec l'ennemi et apologie de la collaboration. Il purge sa peine dans différents lieux de détention jusqu'à sa libération conditionnelle en 1952, après 12 ans de captivité. Affaibli par son incarcération, il disparaît peu à peu de la vie publique et décède le 16 novembre 1952 à Tours. Bien que controversé de par ses idées politiques et ses liens avec le régime nazi, Charles Maurras reste une figure incontournable de l'histoire intellectuelle française. Son style brillant et sa rigueur intellectuelle, couplés à ses convictions nationalistes prononcées, ont fortement marqué son époque et continuent d'influencer les débats sur l'identité et le nationalisme en France.
