Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers, marquis de Saint-Aignan, est né le 29 février 1696 au château de Saint-Aignan dans la province de Berry, en France. Issu d'une famille aristocratique, il est le fils aîné de François de Beauvilliers, duc de Saint-Aignan, et de Marie Charlotte de La Mothe-Houdancourt. Très tôt, Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers fait preuve d'un intérêt prononcé pour les arts et la littérature. Élevé dans un milieu cultivé, il reçoit une excellente éducation à la fois à la maison et auprès de précepteurs renommés. Il développe ainsi une passion pour la musique, la peinture, la poésie et la philosophie. À l'âge de dix-huit ans, Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers est nommé officier au régiment des gardes françaises. Sa carrière militaire lui permet de voyager à travers l'Europe et de participer à plusieurs campagnes militaires, notamment lors de la guerre de Succession d'Espagne. Cependant, sa véritable passion reste les arts. À son retour en France, Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers s'investit pleinement dans la promotion de la culture. Il devient membre de l'Académie française en 1726 et se lie d'amitié avec de nombreux écrivains et artistes de renom, tels que Voltaire, Rousseau et Diderot. En 1743, Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers est nommé surveillant général des bâtiments du roi, une fonction qui lui permet de soutenir financièrement de nombreux artistes et de contribuer à l'enrichissement des collections royales. Il œuvre également à la rénovation de plusieurs monuments historiques, dont le château de Versailles. La reconnaissance de Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers en tant que mécène et protecteur des arts lui vaut d'être élevé au rang de marquis en 1752. Sa notoriété grandissante attire l'attention de la cour, et il est nommé premier gentilhomme de la chambre du roi Louis XV en 1761. Charles Paul François de Beauvilliers décède le 19 février 1770 à Paris, laissant derrière lui un héritage culturel précieux. Son influence sur le monde des arts et sa contribution au patrimoine français lui valent d'être considéré comme l'un des grands mécènes du XVIIIe siècle.
