Charles Tournemire est l'une des figures marquantes de la musique française du XXe siècle, reconnu principalement pour son talent d'organiste et de compositeur. Né le 22 janvier 1870 à Bordeaux, il débute très jeune l'apprentissage musical auprès de son père, lui-même organiste. Sa passion pour l'orgue se développe rapidement et Tournemire devient élève d'Eugène Gigout, l'un des maîtres de l'orgue français de l'époque. Grâce à ses compétences exceptionnelles, il est rapidement remarqué et devient l'organiste de l'église Sainte-Clotilde à Paris à seulement 19 ans. Ce prestigieux poste contribue à sa renommée grandissante et lui permet de multiplier les concerts en France et à l'étranger. Tournemire se distingue grâce à sa virtuosité et son interprétation expressive, mettant en valeur la richesse sonore de l'instrument. Outre son talent d'interprète, Charles Tournemire est également un compositeur prolifique. Il est influencé par les courants de son époque, notamment par le symbolisme et le mysticisme. Ses compositions pour orgue reflètent sa profonde spiritualité et son intérêt pour la liturgie catholique. Il œuvre également dans d'autres genres musicaux tels que la musique de chambre, la musique symphonique et la musique de ballet. L'une de ses œuvres les plus célèbres est le cycle de l'Orgue Mystique, composé de 51 suites pour orgue, correspondant aux différentes périodes du calendrier liturgique chrétien. Cette œuvre monumentale témoigne de la maîtrise technique et de la créativité de Tournemire, ainsi que de son attachement à la tradition liturgique. En plus de ses activités de musicien, Charles Tournemire est également professeur au Conservatoire de Paris, où il forme de nombreux élèves qui deviendront à leur tour des organistes renommés. Parmi ses étudiants figurent des personnalités telles que Olivier Messiaen et Maurice Duruflé, qui vont perpétuer la tradition de l'école d'orgue française. Charles Tournemire décède le 3 novembre 1939 à Arcachon, laissant derrière lui un héritage musical considérable. Son approche novatrice de l'orgue et son exploration de compositions liturgiques ont profondément influencé la musique sacrée du XXe siècle. Aujourd'hui, son travail est encore étudié et apprécié par les organistes du monde entier, qui reconnaissent en lui un maître incontestable de l'orgue français.
