Christine Jorgensen est une icône transgenre née le 30 mai 1926 à New York. Elle devient célèbre dans les années 1950 en étant la première personne connue à avoir effectué une transition médicale de genre féminin à masculin. Avant sa transition, elle était assignée homme à la naissance et se nommait George Jorgensen Jr. Christine grandit dans une famille d'immigrants danois et se sent depuis son plus jeune âge piégée dans un corps qui ne correspond pas à son identité de genre. Elle se tourne vers le Dr Christian Hamburger à l'Hôpital universitaire de Copenhague, qui pratique des chirurgies d'affirmation de genre pionnières dans le monde. C'est là-bas qu'elle subit une série de traitements hormonaux et une chirurgie de réassignation sexuelle en 1952. De retour aux États-Unis, Christine attire l'attention des médias nationaux. Sa transition suscite un grand débat public sur l'identité de genre, la sexualité et les normes sociales. Elle devient une figure de proue de la communauté LGBT et une voix importante dans la lutte pour les droits des personnes transgenres. Christine Jorgensen décide d'utiliser sa notoriété pour sensibiliser le public à la réalité des personnes transgenres. Elle fait des apparitions dans des talk-shows télévisés, donne des conférences et répond à de nombreuses interviews. Sa franchise, sa charisme et son intelligence font d'elle une figure aimée et respectée, bien qu'elle fasse également l'objet de critiques et de controverses. Après avoir ouvert la voie à la visibilité et à la reconnaissance des personnes transgenres, Christine Jorgensen élargit son engagement en travaillant comme écrivaine et activiste. Elle publie son autobiographie "Jorgensen Story: A Personal Memoir" en 1967, où elle raconte son parcours de transition et ses réflexions sur l'identité de genre. Elle voyage également à travers les États-Unis, donnant des conférences sur les droits LGBTQ+. Christine Jorgensen est décédée le 3 mai 1989 à l'âge de 62 ans, mais son héritage perdure.
