Claude Antoine Gabriel, comte de Choiseul, est une figure marquante de l'histoire française du XVIIIe siècle. Né le 7 octobre 1731 à Paris et mort le 15 septembre 1790 à Paris, il appartient à la prestigieuse famille des Choiseul, originaire de Champagne. Appelé communément Choiseul-Stainville, il est le frère de l'influent Étienne François de Choiseul, duc de Choiseul, ministre de Louis XV. Dès son jeune âge, Claude Antoine Gabriel de Choiseul se distingue par son intelligence et son éducation. Il est élevé dans une famille nobiliaire, ce qui lui permet de fréquenter les plus grands esprits du siècle des Lumières, tels que Voltaire et Diderot. Au sein de cette élite intellectuelle, il se passionne pour les arts, la littérature et la philosophie, développant ainsi une culture étendue. S'engageant dans la carrière militaire, Choiseul-Stainville intègre l'armée royale en tant que maréchal de camp et se distingue par ses compétences tactiques. Sa carrière militaire lui vaut d'être nommé chevalier de l'Ordre du Saint-Esprit, la plus haute distinction de la noblesse française. Il est élu député aux États généraux en 1789, où il met tout en œuvre pour défendre les valeurs de la Révolution française, notamment l'égalité et la liberté. Il participe activement à la rédaction de la Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen. Cependant, Choiseul-Stainville est aussi un fervent défenseur de la monarchie constitutionnelle, et il soutient Louis XVI dans son rôle de chef d'État. Malheureusement, Claude Antoine Gabriel de Choiseul ne verra pas la mise en place de la nouvelle France qu'il a contribué à façonner. Il meurt à Paris en 1790, laissant derrière lui un héritage intellectuel et politique important.
