Claude Balbastre était un célèbre compositeur et organiste français né le 8 décembre 1724 à Dijon. Il fut l'un des musiciens les plus renommés de son époque et a laissé un héritage musical important. Dès son plus jeune âge, il a montré un intérêt pour la musique et a commencé à étudier l'orgue avec son père. Il a rapidement montré des talents prodigieux et a été remarqué par de nombreux musiciens et compositeurs de l'époque. En 1740, à l'âge de 16 ans, Balbastre quitte sa ville natale pour s'installer à Paris où il poursuit ses études musicales. Il devient rapidement l'élève de Jean-Philippe Rameau, l'un des plus grands compositeurs de l'époque, et de nombreux autres maîtres de renom. Il est considéré comme l'un des premiers musiciens français à jouer et composer dans le style galant, un style musical influencé par la musique italienne. Claude Balbastre est surtout connu pour son talent exceptionnel à l'orgue. Il a été nommé titulaire de l'orgue de l'église Saint-Roch à Paris en 1756, poste qu'il occupera pendant plus de trente ans. Sa virtuosité à l'orgue lui vaut une réputation internationale et de nombreux musiciens viennent l'écouter et l'admirer. En plus de sa carrière d'interprète, Balbastre était aussi un compositeur prolifique. Il a écrit de nombreuses œuvres pour orgue, clavecin et musique de chambre. Ses compositions témoignent de son talent pour l'improvisation et son inventivité harmonique. Ses pièces sont souvent caractérisées par leur légèreté, leur gaieté et leur élégance. Pendant la Révolution française, Balbastre est resté actif en jouant de l'orgue lors de cérémonies patriotiques. Cependant, ses liens avec l'ancien régime et son association avec la cour royale l'ont mis en danger. Il est arrêté en avril 1793 et emprisonné, mais il est finalement libéré grâce à l'intervention de ses amis et la réduction de peine accordée aux musiciens. Claude Balbastre est décédé le 9 mai 1799 à Paris, laissant derrière lui un héritage musical riche et varié. Son travail a influencé de nombreux compositeurs français ultérieurs et son style unique et innovant continue d'être apprécié par les musiciens et les auditeurs du monde entier.
