Daniel Keyes est un écrivain américain né le 9 août 1927 à Brooklyn, New York. Il est surtout connu pour son roman "Des fleurs pour Algernon" qui lui a valu le prestigieux prix Nebula en 1966. Keyes grandit dans un quartier modeste de Brooklyn et exprime dès son plus jeune âge un intérêt prononcé pour la littérature et l'écriture. Il fait des études en psychologie à l'Université de Brooklyn, puis obtient son master en littérature anglaise à l'Université de l'Ohio. Durant les années 1950, Keyes écrit des histoires de science-fiction et de fantasy pour différents magazines et publications. Cependant, c'est en 1959 que sa carrière d'écrivain prend un tournant décisif avec la publication de sa nouvelle "Flowers for Algernon" dans le magazine The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Ce récit raconte l'histoire de Charlie Gordon, un homme qui a une déficience intellectuelle et subit une opération expérimentale pour augmenter son intelligence. Le succès de cette nouvelle est tel qu'elle est adaptée au théâtre, puis en 1966, Keyes en fait un roman qui devient rapidement un best-seller et une œuvre culte de la littérature américaine. "Des fleurs pour Algernon" aborde des thèmes tels que l'intelligence artificielle, la nature de l'intelligence humaine et les problèmes éthiques liés à l'expérimentation scientifique.
