Il est surtout connu pour son travail avec le réalisateur Sydney Pollack, avec qui il a collaboré sur de nombreux films réputés. Rayfiel a étudié à l'Université de Pennsylvanie, où il a obtenu un diplôme en littérature en 1943. Il a ensuite servi dans l'armée américaine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, où il a été blessé et a reçu la Purple Heart.
