Denis Poisson, célèbre mathématicien et physicien français du XIXe siècle, est né le 21 juin 1781 à Pithiviers, dans le Loiret. Il est élu membre étranger de la Royal Society en 1822, et reçoit la médaille Copley en 1827. Il est également membre de l'Académie des Sciences de Russie et de nombreuses autres institutions scientifiques prestigieuses. Poisson meurt le 25 avril 1840 à Sceaux, laissant derrière lui un héritage scientifique immense.
