Dick Van Patten, de son vrai nom Richard Vincent Van Patten, était un acteur américain de renommée internationale. Né le 9 décembre 1928 à Kew Gardens, un quartier de Queens à New York, il était le fils d'un agent de théâtre et d'une mère au foyer. Très jeune, Dick s'intéresse au monde du spectacle et fait ses débuts sur les planches dès l'âge de sept ans. Il décide alors de suivre les traces de son père et se lance ainsi dans une carrière d'acteur. Au cours des années 1940 et 1950, Van Patten apparaît dans de nombreuses productions théâtrales de Broadway, lui permettant ainsi d'acquérir une solide réputation dans le milieu. Son charisme et son talent lui ouvrent les portes du cinéma, et il fait ses débuts sur grand écran dans le film "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" en 1946. Cependant, c'est à la télévision que Dick Van Patten connaît véritablement la consécration. En 1977, il obtient un rôle principal dans la série "Eight is Enough", dans laquelle il incarne le père d'une famille composée de huit enfants. Cette série connaît un immense succès et permet à Van Patten d'atteindre la popularité à l'échelle internationale. Il reste d'ailleurs fidèle à la télévision tout au long de sa carrière, enchaînant les rôles dans plusieurs séries et téléfilms. Dick Van Patten était également un grand amoureux des animaux et était très engagé dans la cause de leur protection. Il a ainsi cofondé en 1980 l'association "National Guide Dog Month", qui a pour but de récolter des fonds pour l'éducation et la formation de chiens-guides pour les personnes aveugles. Malgré sa carrière bien remplie, Dick Van Patten était un homme humble et discret, toujours dévoué à sa famille. Marié à Patricia Poole en 1954, il était père de trois enfants : Nels, James et Vincent. Il aimait passer du temps avec ses proches et était très apprécié de tous ceux qui le côtoyaient. Dick Van Patten s'est éteint le 23 juin 2015 à l'âge de 86 ans, laissant derrière lui un immense héritage dans le monde du cinéma et de la télévision. Sa gentillesse, sa générosité et son talent ont marqué les esprits et il restera à jamais dans le cœur de ses fans.
