Dominique Dufour de Pradt, né le 23 avril 1759 à Allanche en Auvergne, est une figure majeure de la Révolution française et de l'Empire napoléonien. Issu d'une famille noble, il poursuit ses études au collège de Clermont-Ferrand avant de se consacrer à des études de théologie au séminaire de Saint-Flour. Très vite, Dufour de Pradt se montre intéressé par les idées nouvelles qui traversent alors la France. Il prend part activement à la rédaction de plusieurs pamphlets critiquant le pouvoir royal et s'engage en faveur de la Révolution. Ses talents d'orateur et son intelligence lui valent une reconnaissance rapide, notamment lorsqu'il est élu député du tiers état aux États généraux. Durant la Révolution, Dufour de Pradt se fait connaître pour sa défense des idéaux républicains et de l'égalité des droits. Il participe activement aux débats de l'Assemblée nationale constituante et appuie la politique de confiscation des biens de l'Église. En parallèle, il s'implique également dans le milieu journalistique et devient rédacteur en chef du "Moniteur universel", un journal influent de l'époque. Mais c'est après la Révolution que Dufour de Pradt atteint les sommets de sa carrière. Napoléon Bonaparte le choisit comme ambassadeur de France en Pologne, poste qu'il occupe de 1806 à 1811. Dufour de Pradt se révèle un diplomate talentueux et joue un rôle crucial dans l'alliance franco-polonaise, contribuant ainsi à l'expansion de l'Empire. De retour en France, il est nommé archevêque de Malines en Belgique, une fonction qu'il accepte malgré ses convictions républicaines. Il essaie alors de concilier sa mission religieuse avec ses idéaux politiques, mais se heurte rapidement à l'opposition du clergé belge. Finalement, en 1814, il choisit de renoncer à ses fonctions ecclésiastiques pour se consacrer à l'écriture. Dominique Dufour de Pradt publie alors plusieurs ouvrages politiques et historiques qui lui valent une certaine notoriété. Il témoigne notamment de son expérience en Pologne dans "Histoire de l'ambassade dans le grand-duché de Varsovie", un livre qui rencontre un grand succès à l'époque. Dufour de Pradt s'éteint le 18 juin 1837 à Paris, ayant joué un rôle majeur pendant la Révolution française et l'Empire. Homme de convictions, il restera dans les mémoires comme un des intellectuels les plus influents de son temps, contributeur actif à la construction de l'État français et à la redéfinition des relations internationales.
