Morgan's vigorous efforts in the advancement of education led to the establishment of the New York State Board of Education, an organization that survives to this day. During the Civil War, Morgan served as a staunch supporter of the Union cause. He actively recruited soldiers and personally funded the training of the troops. Morgan also played a crucial role in raising funds for the war effort, providing a significant financial boost to the Union forces. Following his time as governor, Edwin D. Morgan was elected to the United States Senate, where he served two terms from 1863 to 1869. His influence in the Senate was evident through his involvement in various legislative initiatives, including the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862. After leaving the Senate, Morgan continued to be involved in public affairs and philanthropy. He dedicated significant resources to supporting charitable institutions and funding numerous scholarships. Edwin D.
