Barlow’s academic talents were evident from an early age, and he attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He continued his education at Harvard University, graduating in 1855. Following his graduation, Barlow pursued a legal career, studying law and eventually establishing his own practice. However, his true calling turned out to be in public service and the military. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Barlow enlisted in the Union Army and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership qualities and strategic thinking. Barlow is best known for his distinguished service during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. As a colonel of the 61st New York Infantry Regiment, he played a pivotal role in defending the Union lines against Confederate forces, leading a counterattack that helped secure the Union victory. His bravery on the battlefield earned him a promotion to brigadier general and widespread admiration. Despite sustaining severe injuries during the war, including being shot multiple times and being captured by Confederate soldiers, Barlow persevered, further proving his resilience and determination. After the war, he remained in the military as a colonel in the regular army, serving in various roles, including as a military attaché in Europe. In addition to his military career, Barlow had a significant impact on post-war American society. He was a staunch advocate for civil rights and worked diligently to promote the rights and equality of African Americans. Barlow also served as New York City corporation counsel and commissioner of public parks, leaving a lasting legacy on the development of the city. Francis C. Barlow's life was tragically cut short when he died at the age of 45 due to complications from his war injuries. However, his contributions to the military, civil rights, and public service continue to be remembered and celebrated today.
