Henri Dunant was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was a Swiss businessman and social activist, best known for founding the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Geneva Convention. In 1859, while traveling in Italy, Dunant witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, where thousands of wounded soldiers were left without medical care. Shocked by the lack of assistance, he organized local townspeople to provide aid to the injured, regardless of their nationality. This experience led him to write the book "A Memory of Solferino," which proposed the creation of an international organization to care for the wounded in times of war. In 1863, Dunant helped establish the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Geneva Convention, signed in 1864, adopted many of Dunant's ideas and established protocols for the humane treatment of wounded soldiers during conflicts. Throughout his life, Dunant dedicated himself to promoting humanitarian principles and advocating for the rights of the wounded and prisoners of war. He was awarded the first-ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for his contributions to humanitarian causes. Henri Dunant passed away on October 30, 1910, leaving behind a lasting legacy of compassion and altruism.
