John Forbes Nash Jr. was an American mathematician who made significant contributions to the fields of game theory and differential geometry. He was born on June 13, 1928, in Bluefield, West Virginia. Nash attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and Princeton University, where he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1950. In his early career, Nash published groundbreaking work in game theory, ultimately leading to him being awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994. Despite his academic success, Nash struggled with mental illness throughout much of his life, particularly paranoid schizophrenia. However, he was able to make a recovery and continued his work in mathematics and economics. Nash's life was depicted in the 2001 biographical film "A Beautiful Mind," based on the book by Sylvia Nasar. He passed away tragically in a car accident on May 23, 2015, along with his wife Alicia, leaving behind a legacy of important contributions to the fields of mathematics and economics.
