John Glenn, born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, was an exemplary American astronaut, pilot, and politician. He grew up in a small town, where his fascination with flight began at a young age. After graduating from high school, Glenn enrolled in Muskingum College as an engineering major. However, his plans were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Eager to serve his country, Glenn joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program, where he became a highly skilled pilot. He flew 59 combat missions during the war and received numerous accolades for his bravery and skill. Following the war, Glenn pursued a career in aviation, test flying numerous aircraft and setting various speed and endurance records. However, his life took an extraordinary turn when he joined NASA's newly formed Space Task Group in 1959. Glenn quickly emerged as one of the Mercury Seven, the first group of American astronauts. On February 20, 1962, Glenn made history as the first American to orbit the Earth, completing three orbits aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. This momentous achievement instantly transformed him into a national hero. After leaving NASA in 1964, Glenn embarked on a career in politics and public service. He served as a United States senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999, representing his home state with distinction. Glenn's political tenure was marked by his advocacy for education, environmental conservation, and space exploration. In 1998, at the age of 77, he made history once again when he became the oldest person to travel to space as a member of the Space Shuttle Discovery crew. Beyond his professional accomplishments, John Glenn was known for his humility, integrity, and strong work ethic. He was a devoted husband to his wife Annie, whom he married in 1943, and a loving father to their two children. Glenn's legacy extends far beyond his groundbreaking achievements in space and politics.
