John Kander is an American composer, best known for his work in musical theater. Born on March 18, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, he studied music at Oberlin College and Columbia University. Kander began his career in the 1960s, collaborating with lyricist Fred Ebb on a series of successful Broadway musicals, including "Cabaret" and "Chicago." The duo went on to create a number of other acclaimed works, such as "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "The Scottsboro Boys." Kander's music is characterized by its catchy melodies and complex harmonies, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to the world of musical theater, including multiple Tony Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor. Despite the passing of his longtime collaborator Ebb in 2004, Kander continues to compose music for the stage, film, and television, solidifying his reputation as one of the most influential figures in American musical theater.
