John Kundla was an American professional basketball player and coach, born on July 3, 1916, in Star Junction, Pennsylvania. He played college basketball at the University of Minnesota and was selected in the 1943 BAA draft by the Chicago Stags but never played professionally. Kundla then turned to coaching and became the head coach of the Minneapolis Lakers in the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1947. He led the Lakers to five BAA/NBA championships in six years, including the first NBA championship in 1949. Kundla coached the Lakers until 1959 before retiring from coaching. He is best known for coaching Hall of Famers George Mikan, Jim Pollard, and Vern Mikkelsen during his tenure with the Lakers. After his coaching career, Kundla worked as a scout for the Lakers and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. John Kundla passed away on July 23, 2017, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history.
