John Newton was an English sailor and former slave trader who later became a clergyman and prominent abolitionist. Born in 1725 in London, Newton began his seafaring career at a young age, ultimately being forced into the British Navy. After deserting the navy, Newton was captured and became a slave trader, participating in the transportation of African slaves to the Americas. However, after a near-death experience at sea, Newton underwent a spiritual conversion and eventually renounced his involvement in the slave trade. He later became a prominent minister in the Church of England, known for his influential hymns and for his role in the abolitionist movement. Newton is perhaps best known for writing the hymn "Amazing Grace," which remains one of the most popular and recognizable hymns in the world. He spent much of his later life working to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire, ultimately witnessing the passing of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which banned the trading of slaves in the British Empire. John Newton died in 1807, leaving behind a legacy as a vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery and a significant figure in the history of Christianity.
