He went on to play college basketball at Providence College, where he was a standout player and was ultimately drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 1964 NBA Draft. Thompson's career took a turn when he transitioned to coaching, taking on the head coaching role at Georgetown University in 1972. During his tenure at Georgetown, Thompson achieved great success, leading the team to three final four appearances and a national championship in 1984.
