Joseph Echols Lowery was born on October 6, 1921, in Huntsville, Alabama. He grew up during the era of segregation, witnessing firsthand the profound injustices that plagued African Americans in the United States. These experiences motivated him to become a staunch civil rights activist and advocate for racial equality. Lowery attended several historically black colleges, including Nashville's American Baptist College and Payne College in Augusta, Georgia, where he studied Religion and Philosophy. He later graduated from Paine Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Methodist minister. In 1957, Lowery co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) alongside Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and other civil rights leaders. As the first vice president of the SCLC, he played a pivotal role in organizing nonviolent protests and demonstrations against racial discrimination, segregation, and voter suppression throughout the Deep South. Throughout the 1960s, Lowery worked tirelessly to advance the cause of civil rights. He advocated for desegregation in schools, fought against voter suppression, and actively participated in pivotal events like the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965. His courage and dedication earned him recognition and respect as a prominent figure in the movement. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, Lowery became the SCLC's president and continued to lead the organization until 1997. Throughout his tenure, he focused on promoting economic justice, equal opportunities, and combating poverty in marginalized communities. Joseph Lowery's activism extended beyond the borders of the United States. He actively protested against apartheid in South Africa and supported numerous international causes for justice and human rights. Earning numerous accolades for his unwavering commitment to social justice, Lowery received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama in 2009. He passed away on March 27, 2020, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a civil rights icon and an embodiment of hope, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.
