These figures are commonly used in the fields of physics, mathematics, and engineering to visualize the relationship between two oscillating systems. Throughout his career, Lissajous received several awards and honors for his contributions to science, including the Légion d'honneur in 1867. He passed away on June 24, 1880, in Plombières-les-Bains, France, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking research in the fields of optics and acoustics.
