Levi Woodbury, born on December 22, 1789, in Francestown, New Hampshire, was an American attorney, jurist, and politician who played a consequential role in the early history of the United States. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1809, Woodbury studied law and quickly made a name for himself as a prominent attorney in New Hampshire, where he was known for his eloquence and persuasive arguments. In 1816, Woodbury entered politics and was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, where he served for three years. He then became a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing New Hampshire's At-Large district for four terms from 1817 to 1825. During his time in Congress, Woodbury was an ardent supporter of Andrew Jackson, who later appointed him as Secretary of the Navy in 1831. Woodbury's tenure in the Navy Department was marked by his efforts to modernize and expand the naval fleet, making him a vital figure in shaping American naval power. Woodbury's political career continued to ascend when he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1845. As a Supreme Court justice, Woodbury was known for his strong belief in the power of the federal government and his defense of states' rights. He played a significant role in several landmark cases, including the Amistad case, where he wrote the majority opinion, which led to the freedom of illegally enslaved Africans. Outside of his political career, Woodbury was a devoted educator and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the first law school in New England, which later became part of the University of New Hampshire. He devoted much of his spare time to writing legal texts and contributing to legal scholarship. Levi Woodbury's impact on the American legal and political landscape was substantial, as he served in various high-ranking positions, defending the Constitution and championing the rights of the individual under the strong umbrella of the federal government. He passed away on September 4, 1851, leaving a legacy of legal expertise and political influence that continues to resonate in American history.
