Born on August 25, 1753, in Montfort-sur-Meu, France, La Revellière-Lepeaux pursued a career in law and became an advocate in Rennes before being elected to the National Convention in 1792. He aligned himself with the Montagnard faction, known for its radical revolutionary views, and played a vital role in the Committee of Public Safety. Known for his strong republican beliefs, La Revellière-Lepeaux played a crucial part in the fall of Robespierre during the Thermidorian Reaction in 1794. As a member of the Committee of Public Safety, he contributed to the dismantling of the Reign of Terror and advocated for peaceful reconciliation with counter-revolutionaries. In 1795, he co-drafted the popular French Constitution of the Year III, which established the Directory as the new form of government. Being elected as one of the Directors, La Revellière-Lepeaux was in power from 1799 to 1800. However, his moderate policies clashed with the ambitions of Napoleon Bonaparte, who overthrew the Directory in the famous coup of 18 Brumaire. La Revellière-Lepeaux was arrested alongside other directors but was released shortly afterward due to his declining influence. After his political career, La Revellière-Lepeaux retired to private life and dedicated his time to writing philosophical and historical works. He published several books, including a treatise on government, and remained critical of the imperial regime under Napoleon. Despite his reservations towards Napoleon's rule, he was appointed senator in 1805 but largely withdrew from active politics. Louis Marie de La Revellière-Lepeaux passed away on March 27, 1824, in his hometown of Montfort-sur-Meu. As a pivotal figure of the French Revolution and the early years of Napoleon's reign, La Revellière-Lepeaux is remembered for his commitment to republicanism and efforts towards establishing a stable government in France during a tumultuous era.
