Louis XVIII, also known as Louis Stanislas Xavier, was born on November 17, 1755 in the Palace of Versailles. He was the fourth son of the Dauphin Louis, the son of Louis XV, and Maria Josepha of Saxony. Louis XVIII grew up in the midst of the French Revolution, which forced him to flee the country. After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis XVIII was restored to the throne as King of France in 1814. He ruled as a constitutional monarch, implementing the Charter of 1814 which established a constitutional monarchy in France. Despite facing opposition from Bonapartists and royalists, Louis XVIII managed to maintain his rule and establish a period of relative stability in France. He also played a key role in the Congress of Vienna, where he worked to restore the balance of power in Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. Louis XVIII passed away on September 16, 1824, leaving a legacy as the last French monarch before the July Revolution of 1830.
