Born on February 10, 1963, in Montreal, Applebaum began his career in public service as a city councillor in the Montreal borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. He later became the borough's mayor before being appointed to the Montreal Executive Committee in 2009. In 2012, Applebaum made history by becoming the first Anglophone mayor of Montreal in over 100 years. During his time in office, he focused on transparency, accountability, and economic development.
