Raoul Salan was a French Army general and one of the key figures in the Algerian War of Independence. Born on June 10, 1899, in Roquecourbe, France, Salan had a distinguished military career, serving in both World War II and the First Indochina War. However, it was his role in the Algerian conflict that brought him international attention. As a commander of French forces in Algeria, Salan was a staunch advocate of keeping Algeria part of France, leading him to be one of the founding members of the Secret Army Organization (OAS), a terrorist group aiming to overthrow the French government and prevent Algerian independence. Following the French government's decision to grant independence to Algeria, Salan was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the OAS. He was released in 1968 and spent his remaining years in retirement until his death on July 3, 1984, in Paris, France. Despite his controversial actions during the Algerian War, Salan remains a polarizing figure in French military history.
