Sergio Bonelli (December 18, 1932 – January 26, 2011) was a prominent Italian comics writer and publisher, best known for his influential work in the field of superhero comics. Born in Milan, Italy, Bonelli was the son of the renowned Italian comic book publisher Gian Luigi Bonelli. Growing up in a household immersed in the world of comics, it was no surprise that Sergio developed a passion and talent for the medium. In 1940, at the tender age of 7, Bonelli published his first comic strip in his father's magazine, L'Audace, beginning a lifelong journey in the world of comics. He further honed his skills by studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, deepening his understanding of the artistic and narrative components that make a great comic book. In 1950, Sergio Bonelli co-created one of his most iconic characters, "Tex Willer," a western hero who would become one of the longest-running and most successful comic book series in Italy. The popularity of Tex Willer laid the foundation for Bonelli's future endeavors in the comic book industry. Throughout his career, Sergio Bonelli continually expanded his creative horizons, covering various genres such as historical fiction, adventure, science fiction, and thriller. The characters he created, including "Dylan Dog," "Nathan Never," and "Julia," became household names and were beloved by readers both in Italy and internationally. In addition to his work as a writer, Bonelli ventured into publishing, establishing his own imprint, Sergio Bonelli Editore, in 1980. Through this publishing house, he championed innovative storytelling techniques and supported budding talent, becoming a key figure in Italian comics. Regarded as one of the most influential comic book writers in Italy, Bonelli left an indelible mark on the industry. His dedication to storytelling, combined with his knack for creating captivating characters and intricate narratives, solidified his legacy as an icon in Italian popular culture.
