William Henry Bissell was an American politician and the 11th Governor of Illinois. He was born on April 25, 1811 in Hanover Township, New Jersey. Bissell attended Yale College and later studied law, practicing in Monroe County, Illinois. He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1840 and served as a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1847. Bissell was elected Governor of Illinois in 1856 as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he focused on improving the state's infrastructure and education system. Bissell also played a key role in the creation of the Illinois Central Railroad. Unfortunately, his time as governor was short-lived, as he died in office on March 18, 1860, making him the first Illinois governor to die in office. Despite his brief time in office, William Henry Bissell is remembered for his dedication to public service and his efforts to advance the interests of the people of Illinois.
